Loot River Key Art

Loot River is the Dark Souls of Tetris Games

That’s a weird headline. It’s true though. Loot River, by Straka.Studio, is like nothing I’ve seen before. I would get into it, but I’ll just let the developer speak for themselves.

“Armed with the power of the Relic, players can shift the ground beneath them, sliding floating ruins together in a series of tile puzzles. As players venture through these endless catacombs, they’ll encounter beats, lost travelers, and bosses. These cosmic grottos offer a wealth of new weapons and gear to discover, as well as unholy knowledge to unearth for permanent upgrades.

Drawn to shards of an unholy relic, wandering nomads have found themselves in a perpetual cycle of life and death, losing their sanity as they journey through endless parallel realities, devouring each other to absorb the knowledge of their fellow travelers. No two journeys are ever the same as countless lost souls float through the Loot River.

Loot River

That all sounds insane. You’ll essentially be moving the world of Loot River around you to better fight hordes of dark fantasy enemies. Bosses of the massive and Dark Souls-like are on offer as well. The crunchy pixel visuals are a treat to look at. The combat on display looks intense and probably quite hard to master. While I’ve played a lot of Tetris and Dark Souls in my time, a mixture of the two is something I haven’t thought about and definitely didn’t think I’d be writing about. The only thing I didn’t see on display was the ability to make chunks of the world disappear via connecting multiple blocks a la Tetris. While a release date for Loot River wasn’t given, you can wishlist the game here. Also check out the new gameplay overview video below.
