Justin Counts Down To Halloween Day Eighteen: Big Ben Attacks

There is an entire genre of video games we don’t get too many of now, point-and-click adventure. Although granted, we just recently got a new Monkey Island, and we don’t see many anymore. There are three games I think about when it comes to point-and-click. Monkey Island is one of them, but also Maniac Mansion is a fantastic one, but the last one is today’s game…

Clock Tower!

Clock Tower is a weird series that basically changes entirely with each entry.  But Clock Tower followed Jennifer, an orphan being adopted along with Laura, Anne, and Lotte by Mary and brought to her mansion, known as the “Clock Tower” mansion, due to its well large clock tower. The main through line in Clock Tower is once all the orphans arrive, Mary goes to find Mr. Barrows, but she takes too long. Jennifer offers to find out what’s happening, but she finds all the other kids missing after hearing a vicious scream. Jennifer and us, as the player, need to find out what’s going on in the mansion as we are stalked by Scissorman.  The story is intriguing and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through to the end. Depending on various actions throughout the game, there are nine endings.

The gameplay in Clock Tower is well a point-and-click horror adventure game. Searching the environment for items and keys which, some of the objects move places for each playthrough.  Having to manage your stamina to be able to run from Scissorman. What’s really interesting here is when he enters the room you are in, the game enters this panic mode. And depending on Jennifer’s health, she will start to trip and slow down. Thankfully if you get caught, you can escape, but it becomes increasingly difficult as the game continues. And the deaths in the game are gruesome, brutally rough images that have stuck with me for a long time.

While it’s a bit challenging to find a way to play Clock Tower on modern systems, let’s hope that changes soon.
