Resident Evil Village Officially Announced As Resident Evil 8 or 22 Or 27

Survivor horror fans around the world can rejoice today! Or are they gnashing their teeth over the decay of the “true” survival horror genre? Idk, I have trouble keeping track of what gamers are upset about this week. As part of today’s PlayStation 5 showcase, Capcom took the opportunity to show off gameplay for Resident Evil Village. Aka, Resident Evil 8. It’s worth noting that all the official materials call it Resident Evil Village. But the “Village” is stylized into the Roman numeral for 8. They claim in their press release that it’s the, “eighth entry in the best-selling Resident Evil franchise,” which is a lie. This is either the 22nd Resident Evil game or 27th, depending on if you count the remakes. Even if you just include main franchise game, it’s at least the 9th, if not the 12th.

I personally couldn’t give less of a shit if this is Resident Evil 8 or 29 or 312. The game looks dope. I’ll call it whatever they want me to. The announcement confirms several rumors that have been swirling around the internet lately, including the game featuring werewolf-like creatures, a village, a first-person camera, and a potentially evil Chris Redfield. If other rumors are to be believed, this will also be a more psychological experience with plenty of hallucinations and less gunplay. And if you believe other rumors, then Chief Mendez is coming back, but only the legs. All I’m saying is that the rumor mill is a mixed bag.

We do know some concrete details from the Official Press Release:

In the debut cinematic trailer released today, Capcom revealed a glimpse of the evocative new setting and storyline of Resident Evil Village. Set a few years after the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the all-new storyline begins with Ethan and his wife Mia living peacefully in a new location, free from their past nightmares. Just as they are building their new life together, tragedy befalls them once again. Chris Redfield, the legendary hero from the Resident Evil™ series who made a brief appearance in Resident Evil 7 biohazard, is reacquainted with the couple and horribly disrupts their life, leaving Ethan devastated and thrown into an entirely new nightmare.

The first-person action in Resident Evil Village begins when players assume the role of a distraught and shattered Ethan as he seeks to uncover the mysterious new horrors that plague a once peaceful village. Throughout this terrifying journey, players will fight for every breath as they are hunted by vicious new enemies that have infested the snow-capped locale. Channeling the capabilities of next generation consoles, the detailed realism and relentless feeling of fear will increase with each desperate battle for survival, while moments of calm will leave players wondering what new horrors await.

So there you have it. Ethan is back from RE7, and we got a spooky village. I’m sure there well be plenty of time for more rumors and speculation before Resident Evil Village comes out sometime in 2021. Keep in mind that just because this was shown during the PS5 event doesn’t mean it’s a PlayStation exclusive. Resident Evil Villiage will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
