Gears 5 Expansion Lets You Bust Some Hives Next Week

Gears 5 was a solid game that offered quite a bit of shooting for fans of the series. Now fans get more shooting as the just announced Gears 5: Hivebusters expansion brings more to the game. Also it launches next week.

The expansion will follow Scorpio Squad, made up of Lahni, Keegan, and Mac. If you’ve played Gears 5 before you may recognize the trio as the default squad in the game’s Escape mode. The new campaign, which Microsoft says is about 3 hours long, will chronicle their first hivebusting mission. This means they get intentionally captured by the Swarm to infiltrate their bases, then destroy them from the inside before having to make a dramatic escape.

The campaign’s story is being written by Kurtis Wiebe, who also wrote the Gears of War: Hivebusters comic series. In addition to launching the game as a $20 expansion, Gears 5: Game of the Year Edition will also be available. This version of the game will cost $60 and include both the original game and the expansion, along with the Halo: Reach character pack and 30 days of boosted XP gain for multiplayer.

Gears 5: Hivebusters will be launching for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on December 15th, 2020. You can grab the original game on Steam here in preparation for the campaign.
